The Odisha government on Thursday issued an alert of a possible cyclone over the Bay of Bengal, asking the district authorities to be prepared for any situation, The warning comes amid the Indian Meteorological Department also predicting a cyclonic storm around May 8 with a wind speed of up to 75 kilometres/hour.

A cyclonic circulation is expected to emerge over the South Andaman Sea and the surrounding area around May 4, according to the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar. Under the influence, a Low-Pressure Area is predicted to emerge over the same region about May 6, becoming more pronounced over the next 24 hours. Various meteorological models suggest that the low-pressure system would grow into a cyclone and pass through the Odisha-West Bengal coast around May 10. However, the IMD has not yet projected the cyclone’s route or landfall.
The weather service anticipates that a good picture of the probable cyclone’s track will be available by May 7. Furthermore, if the cyclone circulation moves towards Odisha, districts such as Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, and Keonjhar are expected to be hit.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that a clear picture of the possibility of a cyclone is yet to emerge.The cyclonic circulation over South Andaman Sea and its neighbourhood extending up to mid-tropospheric levels persists. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the same region around May 6.It is very likely to move northwestwards and intensify gradually into a depression during the subsequent 48 hours, the IMD said.

The Odisha government has asked collectors of all 18 districts to be prepared for a possible cyclone coming in from the Bay of Bengal and directed them to send a compliance report on the recommended measures with detailed information on arrangements made by 6 May.
Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) PK Jena in a letter to the district collectors of Ganjam, Gajapati, Puri, Khurda, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada and Kandhamal asked them to prepare in advance to reduce the impact of the possible cyclone.

The cyclonic circulation around Andaman sea will repeat tomorrow and move towards north-west. As per our estimate, wind speed now on would hover between 40-50 km/hr, it will further increase May 8 onwards and can go upto 75 km/hr,” IMD senior scientist senior scientist Umashankar Das told ANI.

People of the state got panicked following a flurry of posts on social media claiming that a cyclonic storm is coming to hit the state.Mohapatra made it clear that all low pressures in the sea do not take shape of cyclones and many of them fizzle out within the sea.
