The state cabinet, in November 2021, had cleared a proposal to increase the strength of the Mumbai civic body from 227 to 236 members. Following the decision, the urban development department amended the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, 1888, to change the composition of the corporation. The state government said that the move was necessary owing to the growth in the city’s population in the past two decades.
According to the procedure, once the BMC submits the list of 236 seats to the state election commission, it will scrutinise the proposal and call for suggestions and objections from the general public. Post this, the BMC will conduct a lottery for deciding the reservation status of the administrative wards.
Further, owing to COVID-19, in the current upcoming polls, the BMC is also going to increase polling booths from the current 8,500 booths to around 11,000 polling booths.
Currently, in the civic house of 227 seats, the Shiv Sena has 97 seats while the Bharatiya Janata Party has 83, Congress 29, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) 8, Samajwadi Party (SP) six seats, All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen two seats and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena has one.
In the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, the BJP is eyeing to garner support from north Indian voters in the city in a bid to dislodge its former ally Shiv Sena, which had been controlling the country’s richest civic body for over two decades.
As per the estimates, there are over 40 lakh voters in the city, who hail from north India, mainly Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, and the BJP is eyeing to get a large share of it.

PMC Election 2022
The election to 15 municipal corporations, including Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad and Brihanmumbai, will be held in April, officials of the State Election Commission said on Sunday. The elections were to be held in February as the tenure of the current civic general bodies ends in the second week of March. The last elections were held in February 2017.
“We plan to complete two important tasks — of releasing the final ward plan and final voters’ list by March 15. If the Supreme Court decides about OBC reservation before that, we will need three-four days to decide ward reservations.
BMC Election 2022 New Updated
SEC officials indicated the elections will be held in April. “We have to complete the election process of municipal councils and municipal corporations before May-end,” Kurundkar even as he refused to give election dates. “You can draw your own conclusions based on our plan…whether it will be in April or May,” he added.
BMC elections are going to be held soon in Mumbai, and all the parties are gearing up for it these days. It is being speculated that this year the civic polls may be held in the second or third week of April.
This time elections will be delayed as compared to last time. The main reason for this is the increase in BMC seats this time around. At present, the work of demarcating the ward boundaries for these seats is going on.
The election dates will be announced after the completion of this work. It may be noted that the earlier number of BMC seats was 227, which has now been increased to 236.
This is not the first time that BMC seats have been increased. Between 1991 and 2001, there was a 22.1 percent increase in population, after which 6 seats were increased. During that time, the seats were increased from 221 to 227.
